AMIEU Proposed Rule Changes

PROPOSED RULE CHANGES TO THE AMIEU RULES:

On 8 and 9 March 2012, a meeting of the Federal Executive of the Union endorsed a number of changes to the rules of the AMIEU.  The changes are mostly of an administrative nature, but it is still important for members to be aware of them:

Animals Australia Investigation - Turkey

The horror of the live export trade has once again been exposed due to the hard work and dedication of the team at Animals Australia.  Animals Australia investigators have video evidence of sheep and cattle being slaughtered in breach of international guidelines.  In the last 18 months around half a million head of Australian livestock have been exported to Turkey - to the same facilities Animals Australia investigators visited.

MLA knew about Indonesian Horrors in May 2010

On Thursday, 9 June 2011, the Chairman of MLA, Don Heatley made several public comments denying that MLA had any prior knowledge of the horrific practices aired on the Four Corners program “A Bloody Business”.

Mr. Heatley said:

"If there was complete and utter knowledge of the brutality, the grotesque brutality that we saw recently, we would have been in there immediately"

The MLA also released a public statement on their website that asserted:

Live Export Investigation

On Monday 30 May 2011, Four Corners aired shocking footage of the torture that Australian bred animals are suffering following their live export to Indonesia.

GetUp! Action for Australia will be presenting a petition at Parliament House to Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig:

"We call on you to immediately halt the live exports of Australian cattle to Indonesia and move towards an end to the live exports of Australian animals within 3 years."

Inquiry reveals cattle cruelty at sea

ALMOST 300 cattle that perished on a live-export voyage from Fremantle to Egypt suffered a slow, cruel death, a Federal Government inquiry has found.

During 22 days at sea about 7400 cattle on the lower decks of Wellard Rural Export's MV Ocean Shearer were "panting and gasping" for air and suffering from heat stress while standing in their own excrement, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service report says.
